Uni mates of ours own two fantastic and successful online retail businesses Shoes of Prey (for customised bespoke shoes) and Sneaking Duck (for funky and trendy glasses) - definitely check them out if you haven't heard of them yet.   They also write about their various entrepreneurial adventures on their blog which gives some great insights into the start up world and owning your own business (another must read to add to your google reader).

Recently Michael linked to this great TED talk by Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg about women in senior leadership roles in the workplace.   When you watch it, remember this talk is targeted at women who choose to be in the workforce.    We all know that not all women choose to be in the workforce (especially after having kids).

The talk was very inspiring and particularly resonated with me. I work in a very male dominated industry. I want kids and when I have them I want to be a good mum.  I know I am smart, capable, good at my job. I am career oriented and ambitious and want to be challenged and fulfilled by my work and my career. How do you reconcile all of this?

Women in the workplace do face challenges that men don't. A lot of these challenges arise out of perceptions of women which can be difficult to change. Even as a woman I know I am guilty of these perceptions or misperceptions.   If we are executive, confident and decisive (which are traits valued in senior male executives) we are often labelled as a bitch or unlikeable.   Then if we are 'girly', softer or friendly we are often labelled as 'not executive enough' or 'not confident' in her abilities. It is a delicate balance.

These perceptions not only occur at work but in everyday life. The other day, the Mr and I were at the bank talking to our bank guy about some investments and we had to sign some forms. I signed quickly and decisively and our bank guy consequently described me as 'domineering'.   Now if that isn't a negative perception, I don't know what is (just from me penning my signature on some documents!).   Our bank guy had also made a mistake and told us something that we could do when we actually couldn't.   When I queried this, I was quite forceful and definitive (because really he should've known better!) and I am sure he was thinking I was some hard assed bitch.   If a guy had been telling him the same thing and in the same way, I am sure his perception of that guy would've been very different.

Changing perceptions takes time. It also takes women being in leadership positions to help facilitate this change. Until then, we need to work out what we can do to get us where we want to be and what we can do to make sure we don't pass up opportunities that help us along.  Some of the tips therefore that Sheryl gives in her talk are particularly relevant and I think a good reminder for working women:

Get a seat at the table. Don't underestimate yourself or your abilities and don't let others take credit for your work (because you worked bloody hard for it!)
Speak up and keep your hand up
Don't leave before you leave: stay focused and driven until the time you have to leave (eg for maternity leave).

It is a constant balancing act but I think we should all go after what we want, whatever that may be. If you don't go after it, you will never have it.

The Mr and I are starting to house hunt today... our landlord has decided to increase the rent on our current place so we have to move out. Whilst the thought of moving and packing is making me cringe, it has also meant I have been thinking about interiors and decorating (note this goes totally against the current minimalist project the Mr is having us embark on - shh don't tell him!).

I spied these gorgeous kitchens on one of my favourite blogs, Bright Bazaar and have been a little inspired. Perhaps some bold and bright colours for our new kitchen?

I woke up this morning, turned the laptop on and was hoping to see some pretty dresses from the Screen Actors Guild Awards... so disappointed. The majority looked so blah + so uninspiring.

Two standouts for me though were the below two ladies in white - love love love Rose Byrne in Elie Saab and Zoe Saldana in Givenchy. I thought the Golden Globes were a bit fug too so let's hope the celebs lift their game a bit for the Oscars!

Just had the loveliest weekend...

Despite the 8pm work call on Friday night! (a downside of working in a global company), I spent the rest of my Friday night with Pauline, Shwu, Odmaa, Nat and Sandra celebrating Nat's hens. The Mr and the boys were away in Jakarta for Alex's bucks so us girls planned our own fun. First stop was Maison Ikkoku (I previously blogged about their yummy coffee earlier). Since my first visit, they have opened a men's boutique and a fantastic little rooftop bar. We ended up staying there all night after making friends with the bar tender and revelled in a fun night of gossip, chatting, yummy cocktails, bubbles, shots and chicken wings. You always need a good midnight snack stop for the way home so we headed to Kampong Glam Cafe for late night/early morning milo, 100 plus, kway teo, chicken curry and rice and noodles.

The late night festivities of Friday meant my Saturday had a bit of a late start. But it was a Saturday completely alone and all to myself with no plans. It was amazing. Skype date with D + J in Hong Kong, brunch at my local kopitiam for kopi and chicken macaroni and then a Saturday arvo all to myself. I bought two new dresses, read books, listened to tunes, watched old movies, played on pinterest, read the internet :)

To round out the weekend, today was spent having brunch at Spruce with Jo and AM planning baby showers, hens nights and weddings, skype date with my mum, dad and the two sisters and riding Betsy down to the river to have dinner at Uomasu and drinks at em by the River with the girls. Lots of wonderful girl time, maybe the boys should go away more often? ;) xx

Happy New Year for those folks like me who celebrate Chinese New Year. I am excited about the year of the dragon and what it will bring including lots of little dragon babies!! I can't wait to meet my little nephew and the new little ones of some good friends.

The Mr and I rang in the new year in the lush green surroundings of Ubud in Bali. We stayed at the most amazing resort, Alila Ubud. I definitely recommend staying there if you are ever in the area. Beautiful resort and the friendliest and loveliest staff. Most of my time was spent poolside reading (I got through 3 books!) but we also ventured out and did what we often like to do during holidays - eat lots and find new restaurants. We dined at Mozaic - fabulous fabulous meal. In the top 10 for the Mr. More casual fare and some lethal long island iced teas and mojitos were offered up to us at Betelnut. We also spent one morning biking around the rice fields and the little villages close by being greeted by all the friendly local kids. Next time, we will have to hit up some recommendations from friends including Yoga Barn and hunting down the famous suckling pig in Ubud.

A wonderful trip and some much needed down time. I am however missing the fam who are tonight back home in Brisbane enjoying our traditional annual family New Year dinner at one of our favourite Trinh haunts, Chinese Garden or "le Jardin" as YT affectionately referred to it.

A very good friend of mine posted a link to this letter on facebook written by American writer, John Steinbeck to his son back in 1958. Such a beautiful tender letter about love and life.

Read the whole letter here but some of my favourite bits:

First — if you are in love — that’s a good thing — that’s about the best thing that can happen to anyone. Don’t let anyone make it small or light to you.
Glory in it for one thing and be very glad and grateful for it. The object of love is the best and most beautiful. Try to live up to it.

The Mr bought me a Kindle Touch that arrived the other day. exciting!

I was pretty averse to this notion to begin with. I LOVE proper books - the paper, the smell, the pretty book covers - I don't think I will ever stop buying real books. However, I do see the benefits in e-readers (especially for holidays, travel and a nice alternative to lugging heavy books in your handbag!). Pretty amazing how lightweight these things are.

Now, importantly, I need to find a pretty cover to protect my kindle. The ones available on Amazon are kinda ugly and B.O.R.I.N.G

I have spied a couple on Etsy that I don't mind the the look of - which do you think?

Florence on a Friday...

It's Friday, yay!

That means it's casual friday in the office.. I am inspired by floral today and am wearing a lightweight lilac jacket with an apricot and pastel green floral print (a weekend bargain from Forever 21). It sounds really random but it's pretty I swear!

Some of my favourite florals are the designs from Florence Broadhurst, a designer from rural Queensland. Signature Prints have brought her designs out of the archives and now you can see her prints on wallpaper, stationery + clothing (cute collaboration with Kate Spade), home decor etc.

She sounded like one fascinating and intriguing lady - singing and dancing her way through India, South East Asia and China in the 1920s. She even founded an academy of arts in Shanghai. You can definitely see Asian influences spreading throughout her designs. A book has been written about her if you are interested in reading more, titled "Florence Broadhurst - Her Secret & Extraordinary Lives". I think I need to add it to my reading list!

dealing with toxic people...

This blog is my little outlet, a fun happy creative place for me. I have always tried to keep the blog positive and keep the negative out of it, but unfortunately I am already struggling to meet my new year goals which I only listed down days ago.

My goal to try and not stress out about things I can't fix is not going too well. Sometimes you encounter some toxic / negative people in your life and currently I am struggling a little on how to best deal with it.

I went to my trusty Google and typed "how to deal with toxic people" and I found this helpful post. I hope it helps you too when you are dealing with some difficult people. I have extracted below what I found helpful, which will hopefully get me back on track!

Avoid toxic people. In some cases it may not be an option (ie work!), but more often than not, it is. It is also common to believe you can get a toxic person to change while interacting with them. You will not get them to change and trying it simply is not worth it.
Anticipate toxic people. It is important to be able to spot them quickly, and start avoiding them before any relationship truly develops.
Set firm boundaries. Toxic people will often use you, one way or another. This is where boundaries come in. Boundaries are reflections of what you are and are not willing to do.
Get over your guilt. Most toxic people are very skilled at making others feel guilty when they don’t do what they want. This makes it particularly hard to set and maintain firm boundaries with them. But, there is a way out of this dilemma: getting rid of your guilt. It is your own guilt which toxic people use to break down your boundaries. When you can set and maintain boundaries with them without feeling guilty, the weapon they have against you is gone. Realize that your guilt is irrational, pointless, and it is used against you by toxic people. This is the best way to get over it.
Do not defend yourself. When you avoid toxic people and you set boundaries with them, they frequently resort to accusing you, complaining and playing the victim in an attempt to get you to change your behavior. One of the worst things you can do when this happens is to defend yourself. It is usually a futile action and it only keeps an immature dialog going which eventually helps the toxic person get what they want. You won’t get anywhere with them by defending yourself and your actions.

It's awesome finding stuff in the back of your wardrobe that you haven't worn in ages - it's like shopping in your closet.

Today I pulled out some olive green pants that I haven't worn in forever and teamed it with a plain black top. I was just needing a little something something to brighten it up. So I pulled out the big flower brooch my big sister bought me to wear with my bridesmaid's dress at her wedding a couple of years ago and put it on ala Carrie Bradshaw (circa season 3 of Sex and the City). I googled and that season was originally shown in 2000 - 11 years ago! I really like it - I reckon we should bring the big flower back!

What 2012 means to me...

I promise this will be my last new years related post!

Being away for the Christmas / New Year break and some busy work weeks prior to that means that I have lots of catching up on my blog reading to do. My Google Reader is a bit out of control!

My favourite blogs are full at the moment of reflection and new years resolutions and goals. So I'll jump on the bandwagon... for me the start of 2011 was up and down - pretty crap with some amazing highlights in between but it did (and for so many I know) get a lot better as the year progressed. So to kick off 2012, some of my goals for this year are:

1. Get back into my fitness routine and finally do that half marathon I have been talking about running instead of just signing up for them and then not training / chickening out :)

2. Go to bed earlier - sleep more

3. Just accept there are certain things I can't control and try not to stress out / overthink / overanalyse / try to fix things I can't fix!

4. Stress less, work less (hopefully!)

5. Most importantly, spend more time / keep in contact with the ones I love.

Thanksgiving Dinner...

A late post but better late than never! We were invited to our very first Thanksgiving a few weeks ago. It was a brilliant night filled with lots of friends and so much yummy food! Good times.

We were each told to bring a dish so with twenty people each bringing something, that means a lot of food! I think our lovely hosts were having leftovers for the rest of the week.

I was feeling a bit ambitious so the Mr and I decided to bring 3 dishes - Mac and Cheese, Pecan Pie and Red Velvet Cupcakes. They all turned out quite well I think! Unfortunately I did end up with a Thanksgiving burn on my hand, my Mac and Cheese turned out a bit too dry for my liking when I reheated it to take with us and I forgot to put in an egg in my first batch of cupcake mixture (yes I know now that it makes a massive difference*) #domesticgoddessfail.

Thinking back on my week, it has been a bit up and down - it has been a bit long, a bit stressful and I made some mistakes at work that I was disappointed in myself about. I put up our Christmas tree yesterday - really early I know! But all the Xmas decorations are up in the shops and I thought why not get in the festive mood as well...

In past years, I have been quite inspired to send out Christmas cards but some other years I have been downright lazy. The clever and lovely folks at ellothere (I ordered our wedding invites from them - they have a wonderful range) have just released a snippet of their Christmas collection. I would love to work in this office space! Check out Airbnb's new offices... I love their idea of designing some of their meeting rooms after rooms available on their site. It looks so comfy.

If you haven't used Airbnb before, I recommend having a look for your next travel adventure. We used it when we went to New York last year and scored a great little one bedroom in the lower east side for about 1/3rd of the price of a hotel!

We received Seasons by Donna Hay as a wedding gift so what better than a recipe out of that book to celebrate dinner at home for our first wedding anniversary. We were cracking open a fine bottle of red so I thought the beef, onion and red wine pie looked perfect and it turned out great! (except for maybe buying sweet shortcrust pastry by accident oops! - I really need to perfect my French before buying french only labelled produce from Carrefour next time)

Donna Hay's Beef, Onion and Red Wine Pie

2 tbsp olive oil
1kg beef chuck steak, chopped
1 onion, peeled and cut into wedges
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 1/2 cups beef stock
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 up red wine
1 bay leaf
1 tbsp thyme leaves
2 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)
1/4 cup water, extra
1 x 200g sheet store-bought shortcrust pastry, thawed
1 x 375g block store-bought puff pastry, thawed
1 egg, lightly beaten

Heat a large saucepan. Add the oil and beef and cook in batches for 3-4 minutes or until browned.

Add the onion and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Add the stock, water, wine, bay leaf and thyme.
Bring to a simmer and cooker for 1 1/2 hours or until the beef is tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Combine the cornflour and extra water, add to the beef mixture and cook, stirring for 4-5 minutes or until thickened.

Set aside to cool completely. Preheat the oven to 200 deg celcius.

Line a 22cm pie dish with the shortcrust pastry. Spoon the beef mixture into the dish.

Place puff pastry on top of the pie, press the edges of the pastry together and trim.

Brush the top of the pie with the egg and make a slit in the top.

Bake for 30-40 minutes or until the top is golden. Serves 4.

The book celebrates seasonal cooking and is gorgeous with beautiful photography and food styling. Donna Hay's recipes are always so simple and hassle free too. The book's been out for a while now and I definitely recommend picking up a copy for your bookshelf.

It's Melbourne Cup day today in Australia.

Being in Singapore, today I am missing the work Melbourne Cup lunches, sweepstakes, having the afternoon off, my mum who used to always win and come home with a meat tray and of course all the pretty hats and fascinators.

Frocking up and going to the races is quite a big deal in Oz. I haven't really seen it replicated to the same degree at the races in Hong Kong and Singapore where it is kept pretty casual.

If I were going to the races today, I would look to Alannah Hill for some gorgeous inspiration - florals, brights, bows, polka dots, cute little hats.

So you may have seen I have given bubbletealove a slight makeover... Now all I need is a pretty new header.. I wish I was a bit more artistic/techy. I think a makeover is always a good thing. It doesn't always have to be dramatic to be effective.

Often we get too comfortable (and I am not saying comfort is a bad thing) but it's always nice and exciting to try something new and get out of your comfort zone for a bit. It is often where the magic happens...

With all this travel for work and play, I am on the hunt for some new luggage.. my trusty old carry on that has seen me through many an adventure has definitely seen better days!

We are off to Vietnam in a couple of weeks time with the fam and I can't wait!!

It's so hard to find authentic and tasty Vietnamese food in Singapore so I am hanging out for some amazing Viet food and spending time with my parents and second mum.

Given the lack of available Vietnamese food here, I have been inspired lately to cook more of it at home... I need to get some more cooking lessons from my mama! Although like a lot of mums, she doesn't really use recipes or measurements and normally cooks based on taste, gut and her experience.

Fortunately for us rookies, we have the interwebs... The Ravenous Couple (thanks Hieu!) and Viet World Kitchen seem to be full of great recipes and of course there are also old faves, Luke Nguyen and those lovely folks at SBS. Here's hoping that one day, I can cook as well as my mama!

So it seems my battle with jetlag is finally over, my health is back and I am feeling normal again, yay!

As readers know, I was recently in New York for work. A fun but long jet-lag filled week. However, I was able to have a day or so free and caught up with Ro and Andrew (who were on an epic US holiday) and Liz and John (our mates who have lived in NY for a while now). What did we get up to?

First stop was meeting for dinner at Schillers Liquor Bar. I had the Mac + Cheese - it was yum! I never used to be a creamy pasta kind of person but have recently been hooked on Mac and Cheese after eating it (and loving it) at Bedrock a few months ago. Schillers has a great buzzy, warm atmosphere with some funky and quirky decor.

After Schillers, we headed around the corner to a little speakeasy - The Back Room. A hidden entrance down some stairs and an alley led us to a big room that felt like someone's living room complete with fireplace, massive velvet couches, books and a globe. All drinks served in teacups :)

The next morning, I left my lodgings in the lower east side at The Bowery House (think edgy fancyish youth hostel - pretty good for $80/night!), coffee and bagel in hand and walked over to the West Village to Liz and John's place. Ro and I headed to Tartine for breakfast. Tiny, quaint little cafe where I had some fabulous eggs.

After Tartine, Ro and I started our adventures for the day - we walked through the West Village and up to Chelsea. One of our first stops was the lovely Anthropologie where I picked up some things for home and a few little things for YT for the b'day. We headed over to Chelsea Market and delighted in all the fresh produce, market stalls and all around yummy goodness and explored some of the shops in the Meatpacking District. We stopped off at the Standard Grill Living Room underneath the Standard Hotel for lunch where we had what Ro calls, our yipster (yuppie hipster) lunch. Then it was off to walk the Highline (railway converted into awesome park/public space). Finished up with a drink at Eataly (a mecca for all things Italian food) in the Flatiron district. It was a beautiful sunny day and a wonderful way to spend a few hours exploring the city and catching up.

Dinner that night was pizza at Arturo's followed up by some outstanding improv comedy at UCB. The others went off for more drinks but I ventured back home in preparation for my long flight home.

My last morning in New York was spent having an early morning breakfast of coffee, croissant, soft boiled egg and soldiers and the New York Times at Balthazar. The perfect way to end my New York week. The subsequent 2 days it took me to get home was less than pleasant but that is another story for another day!

Last night I watched the pilot episode of Hart of Dixie, the new show starring one of my favourite style icons, Rachel Bilson. Charming little show about a NYC doctor finding herself in a small town in Alabama. I am obsessed with her styling on the show - the clothes and shoes are gorgeous! See the below pics from the pilot. To say I love books is an understatement. When I have spare time, I usually devour them pretty quickly. On our recent mini break, things were no different and I started and finished The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery during the course of the long weekend. AM lent it to me after Jo gave it to her as a birthday gift. Yay for sharing books!

Originally written in French (and thankfully translated into English so I could enjoy it!), this book is charming, beautifully written and delightful. Bittersweet and brilliant, this has got to be one of my most favourite reads ever (big call I know). I won't give you any plot summaries. You.must.read.it.

I am blogging today from a cozy daybed on the balcony of our totally lush suite in Chiang Mai - I feel so completely spoilt and relaxed. It is lovely!

We plan to meet some elephants, hit some temples perhaps a cooking class and of course eat some amazing Northern Thai food. But the main agenda for the next few days will be lots of laziness, reading, sitting by the pool and much needed rest. Trying to keep things simple and trouble free, I want my biggest concern for the next few days to only be "what poolside outfit shall I wear?" :)

I am inspired by these gorgeous shots from the 2011/2012 High Summer Swim collection from Zimmermann... the lace, the ruffles, the floral!

However I think my Forever 21 floral maxi dresses, Cotton On oversized linen shirts and H&M bikinis will suffice this time around...

I have previously blogged about Haji Lane - one of my fave streets in Singapore. I took Jac there on the weekend so I thought it was a good chance to tell you about some of my favourite stores if you are ever stopping by!

Green Poppies: come here for your fill of cute stationery and on trend but affordable clothes. I was very tempted by a cream lightweight blazer but figured I didn't really need to add another jacket to my wardrobe especially when I live in a tropical climate... even though I secretly think I may go back and buy it - what can I say, the aircon is cold in my office!
Soon Lee: lovely little emporium filled with books, accessories and clothes. They were having a book sale on the weekend so I bought a hard cover copy of Little Women (my all time favourite childhood classic) and The Beautiful and the Damned
Threadbare and Squirrel: Cuteness. Jac bought a great pair of earrings from here.
Salad Shop: come here for pretty homewares
Grey Homme: clothes for the boys
Pluck: vintage store serving yummy ice cream and apple crumble
Dulcetfig: vintage store and they also have a cute little and friendly shop cat who always says hello
Tangers: cheap and pretty clothes

Haji Lane is located in the Arab Quarter/Kampong Glam area which is a wonderful area to explore - there are heaps of beautiful fabric and textiles stores, shops selling perfumes and oils and colourful shophouses.

For some respite from your shopping, check out newly opened coffee place Maison Ikkoku (which we very happily discovered on the weekend) or have some nasi padang and a milo dinosaur at Kampong Glam Cafe. yum.

Today is the Mr's birthday and also my sister's and brother-in-law's 2 year wedding anniversary. Such a happy day!

We had quite the celebration on Saturday night for the Mr's birthday on the Zsofi rooftop - lots and lots of sangria, yum tapas, amazing friends and of course some late night karaoke. Tonight I am taking the Mr out for dinner at a surprise and secret location (my present to him, as I have no idea what to buy him!) and we are also taking a couple of days off at the end of the week and having a sneaky long weekend in Chiang Mai. Yay!

As some readers already know, I have two mums who I look up to completely and admire. They are both amazing, strong women who have been through and survived so much in their lives. Wars, boat journeys, love, loss - they have both been through so much already. Fortunately for them, in recent years they have been able to enjoy some respite with the luxury of overseas holidays and adventures after having to look after us kids for so long and not needing to run around after us as much!

My dear mama just got back from a one month trip away where she visted family in the States and Canada and also undertook a whirlwind tour of some major US cities with some of her friends. She had an amazing time and like with all mum's adventures, she has regaled me with stories of how cheap things are and how good the food is (especially the viet food!). It isn't the first time she has been away on her own leaving papa T at home for extended periods of time :) **

Cath, equally adventurous, is about to embark on an an amazing trip to India and fortunately for us will be stopping over in Singapore on her way home. India is a place I am dying to get to so am very interested to hear what she thinks.

Today would've been my second dad's 64th birthday.

September will always be a tough month.. whilst it does mean the celebration of the Mr and brother in law's birthdays and my big sister and bro's wedding anniversary which are all such happy and wonderful days, it also signifies Pete's birthday and the month he so suddenly and unexpectedly left us.

Happy Birthday Pete. We miss you so very much. We'll have a glass of lovely red for you tonight. Let's also hope the Wallabies win in the rugby on Saturday for you xx

It has been STEAMY here in Singapore! - and it seems more so than usual.

I am dying for some rain so it cools down a little... so to combat the heat, today's work uniform consists of a lightweight stripey navy and cream jersey dress purchased recently in Sydney, complete with pockets (how i love pockets!). I totally dig stripes.
